The "Matthew of Bristol" is a modern recreation of a square rigged sailing ship in which explorer John Cabot made his voyage from the City of Bristol to North America in 1497. The European explorers of that time hoped to find a sea route to Asia to trade silks and spices, but instead of finding China or Japan, Cabot and his crew landed in Newfoundland, Canada and claimed it for King Henry V11. Today the replica of the original Matthew sits proudly in Bristol harbour alongside the SS Great Britain for all to see. Visitors are able to board the Matthew as well as take trips around the harbour. In 1997 the replica Matthew set off on a voyage following the same course as John Cabot in 1497 and sailed across to Newfoundland.
