The SS Great Britain was a world first when Brunel, one of the greatest Victorian engineers, conceived the combination of a screw propeller, an iron hull, and a huge 1000 horsepower steam engine. This unique ship design combined new technologies in a way which changed world travel. On her maiden voyage across the Atlantic the SS Great Britain easily broke the previous speed record. The SS Great Britain continued sailing until 1886, and travelled thirty-two times around the world and nearly a million miles at sea. Finally abandoned in the Falkland Islands in 1937, the ship fell into disrepair after more than 40 years being used as a floating warehouse. In 1970 an ambitious salvage effort brought the SS Gtreat Britain home to Bristol, where today the ship can be found in the dry dock where it was originally built.
